Rooney: United Should Not Inherit Man City Titles

Wayne Rooney has made it clear where he stands on a hypothetical that would stir plenty of emotion at Old Trafford: if Manchester City lose Premier League titles, United should not be given them.

The former United captain and record goalscorer said his old club do not "deserve" to be awarded the trophies should City be stripped of them. His view is that championships belong to the teams who beat everyone else over a full season, not to those who happen to finish second when a rival is punished.

The comments come against the backdrop of the long-running case against City over alleged breaches of the league's financial rules. The club has consistently denied wrongdoing, and any outcome that led to titles being removed would raise a difficult question about what happens to the honours afterwards.
